**Coal** is a material generated in the world as **Coal Ore**, and **Charcoal** is a similar material obtained from smelting [[wood]]. Coal can be crafted into **Blocks of Coal**. Among the many functions of coal and charcoal, they can be used to power [[Furnace Engines|Furnace Engine]].
## Obtaining

Blocks of coal cannot be found naturally in the world but can be created through the following methods:

### Obtaining Charcoal
Charcoal is a drop when mining [Campfires](http:/minecraft.gamepedia.com/Campfire) with a [[Mechanical Drill]] or any pickaxe not enchanted with [Silk Touch](http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Silk_Touch). It can be created through the following methods:

### Obtaining Coal

Coal, charcoal, and blocks of coal can all be used to power [Furnaces](http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Furnace), [Smokers](http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Smoker), [Blast Furnaces](http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Blast_Furnace), and [[Furnace Engines|Furnace Engine]].
