First of all we'll need to get the dependencies needed to run sway and the supporting infrastructure. I have found that the version of libinput available on Debian stable is too low to build sway. Therefore I have updated my system to use the testing repositories. To do this, simply replace every occurrence of 'jessie' to 'testing' in /etc/apt/sources.list. You can now run 'apt-get update', 'apt-get upgrade' and 'apt-get dist-upgrade' to get your system up to date (note: dist-upgrade command downloads more than 1GB if the Gnome desktop environment is installed). It's also possible to only download certain packages from the testing repositories although I have not investigated this possibility.
