Note: these instructions are community-maintained and not supported by sway.
This document will guide you through installing sway on a modern Debian system. Please edit this page if you spot inaccuracies or grammar errors.
First of all we'll need to get the dependencies needed to run sway and the supporting infrastructure. I have found that the version of libinput available on Debian stable is too low to build sway. Therefore I have updated my system to use the testing repositories. To do this, simply replace every occurrence of 'jessie' to 'testing' in /etc/apt/sources.list. You can now run 'apt-get update', 'apt-get upgrade' and 'apt-get dist-upgrade' to get your system up to date (note: dist-upgrade command downloads more than 1GB if the Gnome desktop environment is installed). It's also possible to only download certain packages from the testing repositories although I have not investigated this possibility.
